Current Affairs 6 January 2025: India Fortifies Indo-Pacific Strategy and Unveils Quantum Tech Roadmap

ree

On January 6, 2025, India demonstrated a strong focus on its strategic foreign policy objectives and its ambitions in frontier science and technology. The day was highlighted by a high-stakes diplomatic visit to a key Indo-Pacific partner and the unveiling of a detailed roadmap for India's mission to become a global leader in quantum technologies.

Foreign Policy: Strengthening the Indo-Pacific Arc with Australia

The Indian External Affairs Minister (EAM) embarked on a crucial three-day visit to Canberra, Australia, to co-chair the annual 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue alongside the Defence Minister. This dialogue with their Australian counterparts is a cornerstone of the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and is pivotal for shaping the security architecture of the Indo-Pacific region.

The agenda for the dialogue is packed with strategic priorities. A primary focus is on enhancing maritime security cooperation, including joint naval patrols and expanding the scope of the AUSINDEX maritime exercise. The ministers are also set to discuss concrete steps to strengthen the Quad alliance (comprising India, Australia, the US, and Japan) in areas beyond security, such as vaccine delivery, climate action, and critical technology supply chains. A key expected outcome is the finalization of a pact on resilient critical minerals supply chains, which would secure India's access to essential resources like lithium and cobalt, crucial for its electronics and electric vehicle industries.

Science and Technology: National Quantum Mission Roadmap Revealed

In a significant leap towards developing future technologies, the office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India unveiled the detailed implementation roadmap for the National Quantum Mission (NQM). The mission, with an allocated budget of ₹8,000 crore over the next five years, aims to seed, nurture, and scale up scientific and industrial research and development in Quantum Technology.

The roadmap outlines the establishment of four thematic 'Quantum Hubs' at premier academic institutions, including IISc Bangalore and TIFR Mumbai. These hubs will focus on distinct areas: quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensing & metrology, and quantum materials & devices. The mission's primary goal is to develop indigenous quantum computers with up to 1000 qubits in the next five years and to create a secure quantum communication network linking major cities across 2000 km. This ambitious plan is a direct push under the 'Make in India' initiative to position India as a key global player in the second quantum revolution.

Corporate and Automotive Sector: A Leap into Solid-State Battery Tech

A major Indian automotive company announced a strategic partnership with a leading South Korean battery technology firm to establish a Giga-factory for manufacturing solid-state batteries in India. The plant, which will be located in Pune, is a multi-billion dollar investment and is expected to be one of the first large-scale manufacturing facilities for this next-generation battery technology in the world.

Solid-state batteries are considered the holy grail for electric vehicles as they offer higher energy density, faster charging speeds, and improved safety compared to current lithium-ion batteries. This collaboration is a massive boost for India's EV ambitions, promising to reduce reliance on imported battery cells and create a local ecosystem for advanced battery manufacturing.

Health and Wellness: AYUSH Aahaar Portal Launched

The Union Health Ministry launched a new initiative to promote traditional Indian nutrition. A new web portal and awareness campaign named 'AYUSH Aahaar' was unveiled. The portal serves as a digital repository of scientifically validated recipes and dietary guidelines based on Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) principles. The campaign's primary objective is to facilitate the integration of these nutritious and traditional diets into the menus of the Mid-Day Meal scheme in schools and canteens across government offices, promoting a "healthy body, healthy mind" approach nationwide.

Environment: Tiger Population Shows Healthy Growth

Bringing cheer to wildlife conservationists, the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) released the summary report of its 2024 tiger census. The report revealed a heartening increase in India's tiger population, reaffirming the success of 'Project Tiger'. The numbers showed a healthy annual growth rate, with the total population now comfortably above 3,800. The state of Madhya Pradesh successfully retained its coveted "Tiger State" status, recording the highest number of tigers, followed closely by Karnataka and Uttarakhand. The report highlighted that conservation efforts, community involvement, and the use of technology for monitoring have been key factors in this success story.
